In winter it is more important than ever to keep the surface of our lawn clean. The presence of organic residues or moss can lead to decay or suffocation. In addition, stagnation and the persistence of moisture on the ground, which is the main cause of fungal diseases, are encouraged. The great work of removing the leaves should already have been done in autumn, but a second pass may be necessary. In the meantime, we will also remove the moss-covered areas with a fine-meshed rake or knife.
If it no longer freezes during the night, we can start distributing iron sulphate, possibly by choosing a granular formulation. This guarantees an easier and more homogeneous distribution and a more gradual release: in this way we will avoid the damages caused by burning.

Felt removal and soil aeration
Towards the end of the month, especially in the more temperate areas, it is possible to continue with the operations in early spring. In general, dead parts can be removed by energetic raking. It is also important to facilitate the draining of the water, thus avoiding harmful stagnation. This can be achieved in different ways. First of all, we can use spiked shoes which, by creating holes in the ground, make it more permeable.
We work on a non-moist day and make several passes crossing the direction. It can also be very useful, towards the end of the month, to start with core drilling or scarification: in small areas you can do a manual processing, otherwise it is good to rent or buy a specific tool. Finally, we distribute a light layer of fine soil.
Rehabilitation and fertilization
Once these operations have been completed, areas with thinning if not completely bare will be highlighted. This is even more true if for the initial realization we had chosen macrothermic essences. In order to obtain a thick layer as soon as possible, it is best to restore or to transeminate it. Let’s buy specific seeds: they germinate at lower temperatures and settle more deeply and quickly. For best results, we scratch the surface with a rake and then distribute the seeds evenly.
We cover with a layer of specific soil and pass a roller. In order to have a rapid and deep rooting, an excellent ally is a “starter” fertilizer provided with a good dose of nitrogen with immediate effect, but also of phosphorus and potassium for a good rooting. It is also very important to keep the surface always slightly moist.
Lawn in February: The first cut
The first cut may be necessary in the last decade of this month. Usually the vegetative recovery is still very weak, but our aim is not to shorten the threads. In reality, it is just a matter of removing the finest impurities that we have not been able to remove with the other tools. The suction force of the lawnmower can in fact be of great help, especially if we do not have an electric leaf vacuum.
It is also a practical way to clear the ground a little and to proceed with other maintenance operations, making them much easier. Ideally, you should adjust the appliance not too low (between 2.5 and 3 cm) and work at the end of a hot and sunny day, ensuring that the leaves are well dried. Before proceeding, check that the machine is working properly and that the blades are sharpened.
