The Ulex europaeus or ginestrone is an evergreen shrub of medium size, widespread in the Mediterranean area, the adult specimens can reach 3-4 meters high, but you can keep the size smaller by pruning the shrub every year after flowering; produces thin woody stems, green in color, erect, poorly branched, completely covered with small linear leaves, thorny, stiff, dark green in color, from late spring until autumn produces many small flowers of yellow gold, very fragrant.

Plant of easy cultivation, is present in gardens but is also very widespread in the wild, especially in central and southern regions. It is also used as a cut flower, in the cosmetics industry, in herbal medicine.

The plants of the Ulex europaeus , commonly called ginestrone , should be placed in a sunny place, if grown in an excessively shady position, the gorse tends to grow poorly and flower poorly. Usually it does not fear the cold, although it is advisable to cover the canopy during the winter in regions with very cold winters, using the farm fabric, so as to avoid exposure to excessively intense and persistent frost.

In case of very harsh climate, it could be useful to place some mulching material at the foot of the plant, to protect the root system.

Thanks to its resistance it can be cultivated without problems in the ground, respecting the precautions just described if the climate is particularly cold.

They are very decorative plants and can be successfully used to colour gardens.

Always remember to wait for the soil to be dry before proceeding with a new watering, because wet soils are poorly tolerated by this type of plant.

They do not need fertilization, the roots of the ginestrone live in symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing bacteria: these plants are often used to enrich very poor soils.

ginestrone This variety of plants grow in any well-drained soil; they prefer calcareous, even stony or sandy soils; they do not like excessively compact or too humid soils. For this reason, it is advisable to check that the base of the plant does not form stagnations of water, which could affect the health of these specimens.

As far as the multiplication of this kind of shrub is concerned, it usually takes place by seed; plants produce small pods containing 4-5 seeds; when ripe, the semi-woody pod explodes, releasing the seeds, which are easily found around the plant.
