As it happens for many other fruits widespread in cultivation in Europe, also the apricot is collected on the plants of a species of prunus, called Prunus armeniaca; small tree, which reaches 5-8 meters high, deciduous, native to China, widespread for thousands of years throughout Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean area.
It is a beautiful tree, with oval foliage, bright green, smooth and shiny; in spring, before the leaves appear, the Prunus armeniaca produces countless star-shaped flowers, white or pink, followed by the fruits, oval drupes, fleshy, orange-yellow, velvety, containing a large stone.
Apricot fruits have always been appreciated, raw or dried, or used to prepare jams and fruit preserves; very appreciated also in the oriental medicine, suitable for the alimentation even of the smallest ones, it is a precious fruit, rich of vitamins and mineral salts. There are many cultivars of apricot, with production of fruit at different times of the year, placing different varieties we can have ripe apricots from June until the end of July – early August.
Growing Prunus armeniaca
It is a vigorous tree, which does not fear the frost, and is therefore placed in the garden, in a sunny place; even if it is not afraid of the cold, it is a plant with early flowering, which, therefore, is not cultivated in areas with a very rigid winter climate, in fact, the late winter flowering can be completely compromised by late frosts; the fruits of prunus armeniaca Moreover, they prefer sunny, warm and dry places, and instead tend to spoil, or even rot, in very rainy areas or with cold springs and summers.

Usually, the major pruning that is carried out on the fruit plants, and also on the apricot, takes place on young plants, so as to choose the shape that the plant will have as an adult; in the orchards of production, the plants are pruned low, not higher than 3-5 meters, with a cup shape, to allow a faster harvesting of the fruits.
In the home garden we can leave our apricot to develop in a more “natural” way, allowing it to grow more if we have the space to do so; however, let’s avoid letting it develop a flaming canopy, trying to encourage the development of the branches that widen the canopy and grow outwards, rather than those that grow straight upwards.
Therefore, we usually proceed by shortening the longest branches and thinning the excessively dense areas of the foliage; let’s avoid the drastic pruning on the already adult plants.
It happens in particular years that the plant produces an impressive amount of fruit, to avoid that the bring to maturity all these fruits is too much work for the plant remove a good percentage, in this way we will also have larger fruits.
