It is a genus comprising 15-16 septa of primitive cacti, the only ones which still have real leaves, native to Mexico and Brazil, climbing; in the wild, they reach heights over the 9-10 m. They have thin, woody stems, which, with the age, are covered by areoles with thorns long up to 5-8 cm; they have big dark leaves, leathery, pointed oval, which usually fall in winter. In summer, it produces inflorescences formed by several perfumed flowers, of white, pink, yellow, red or violet colour.
In autumn, the flowers leave room to the fruits, small yellowish berries, edible.

They prefer very bright locations, but it is advisable to place them in shady places during the hottest periods of the year.
