Epiphyllum – Fatty Plants – How to Cure the Epiphyllum

The epipos;epiphyllum is in effect part of the same family as the fig tree of India. But contrary to what happens to other members of the same group, the epipos;epiphyllum has absolutely the need for excellent humidity. The perfect substrate, in fact, must not be dry under any circumstances. This can only be done with 1/3 of this substrate. The rest must necessarily be well moist.

To check the humidity levels it is possible to do the so-called “finger test”, inserting a finger in the soil and checking how far the soil is dry. This is especially true in spring and summer. In autumn and winter, it is imperative to reduce the amount of water used. The soil, however, must always be moist but absolutely never soaked.

Cultivating the epipos;epiphyllum

Fiori di epiphyllum The cultivation of epiphyllum in pots is not at all complicated. It is necessary to have a particularly loose soil, rich in organic substances and coarse materials in order to be draining and to avoid the dreaded water stagnation. Every 2.3 years it is necessary to repot the epiphyllum, possibly at the end of flowering, i.e. around April-July. This plant does not need to be pruned. Just think about the periodic elimination of dry or damaged parts to prevent them from carrying diseases.

The multiplication of the epipos;epiphyllum takes place mainly by cutting, to be taken in the middle of summer and placed in a sheltered place for 10 days. Then, we proceed with the planting, burying 1/3 of the cutting in a pot, in a shaded place, keeping the soil humid.

The importance of proper fertilization

Epiphyllum piantaThe epipos;epiphyllum is absolutely not a plant that needs special fertilization to grow better and healthier. Simply in spring and autumn (therefore twice a year) it is sufficient to use a fertilizer to be diluted with the water that is used during irrigation operations. Compared to the doses indicated on the packages, it is important to reduce the percentages a lot, reducing them to about 1/3. In winter it is absolutely forbidden to fertilize the epipos;epiphyllum.

There are elements that must not be missing in the ideal fertilizer. These are, in particular, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in formulations 6:6:6, 8:8:8, or 10:10:10. Fertilization, strictly following these percentages, should be carried out once a month on average, avoiding the coldest moments of the year or those when the frosts occur.

Epiphyllum: Ideal exposure and possible diseases of epiphyllum

Epiphyllum fiori In the cultivation of epipos;epiphyllum it is essential to respect the correct exposure. The plant grows and develops optimally between 7 and 21°C. Temperatures can also be higher as long as humidity levels exceed 80%. The ideal exposure is strictly in the shade. The sun’s rays must necessarily be well filtered as they can irreparably damage the plant. The epiphyllum are lovers of the air.

It is therefore essential to place them in well ventilated areas that are absolutely protected from the wind. In periods that are too cold, it is advisable to put the vase inside the house. Epiphyllums are very resistant to diseases. The “floury cochineal” is one of the main enemies, to be defeated with specific pesticides. Burns indicate that the plant is too exposed.
