Where to place it?
Unlike an “artificial” tree, in this case it is extremely important to choose a scenic location, but at the same time suitable to preserve its state of health. In particular, it is necessary to choose a room that is as bright as possible, while avoiding direct light. A good solution is to use white curtains in the middle of the day, especially if we have large windows, perhaps facing south.
However, the opposite situation should also be avoided: the total lack of light will quickly lead to a general weakening of the tree. So let’s avoid keeping the shutters closed: good lighting must be guaranteed for at least 6 hours a day.
Why do you lose your needles?
A frequent drawback is the drying out and dropping of the needles: in addition to the continuous commitment to cleaning, it leads to the loss of sparkling beauty. This phenomenon is largely due to the extremely dry environment of our homes. To avoid this, we immediately place many humidifiers on the radiators. It is even better to put the appropriate electrical appliances into operation, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
A further help can come from a very deep saucer filled with expanded clay: you will need to wet it regularly, but avoid that the water level reaches the base of the pot. In this way we will significantly increase the rate, but we will avoid water stagnation and dangerous rottenness at the level of the roots. If we have not decorated it with electric lights we can vaporize the entire canopy with demineralized water, even several times a day (especially in the hottest hours).
Other causes of deterioration
The deterioration of these trees is always in some way related to the environment in which they live. Another important factor is the temperature: usually, in the winter months, our houses are very hot. Many of us regulate the thermostat between 20 and 22°C. Fir trees, on the other hand, need a cooler climate: to help them withstand an environment that is “unnatural” to them, it is better, during the day, not to climb above 18°C.
It is also very useful to artificially create a good temperature range, as is normally the case in the mountains during the winter months. If we can, during the night, let the temperature drop even to 12°C: you will see that the plant will benefit from it showing itself in perfect shape for all festivities.
Then we avoid sudden changes in temperature, draughts and even sources of heat in the vicinity (no radiators or fireplaces lit!).
Care of the spruce at home: Routine maintenance and how to behave after the holidays
Watering should never be excessive: the substrate should remain only slightly moist. Excessive dryness will lead to drying out, while soil soaked in water will certainly cause root asphyxiation and rottenness. In normal conditions it is advisable to water abundantly once a week or at least when the soil is dry in depth.
When we reach the Epiphany and put away the decorations, we will have to commit ourselves to keep the fir tree at its best for the years to come. The ideal is to move it out gradually. For example, let’s put it first in an unheated room or on a veranda and then put it outside in the afternoon hours, gradually increasing its stay.
Summer, especially in the plains, can be devastating: let’s place the pot in the shade of a large deciduous tree and commit ourselves to keeping the ambient humidity high. A possible repotting is to be done in the spring: an excellent substratum is obtained by mixing acidic garden earth and compost, in equal measure.
