The Monstera deliciosa is very sensitive to fertilization, for this reason it is good not to exaggerate; an excess of fertilizer could make it develop very large leaves and alters the balance. The recommended fertilizer is the one for indoor plants, rightly diluted.
The frequency of fertilization varies depending on the age of the specimens: when they are young they need more nourishment than when they are now adult plants; it is a good idea to carry out at least two or three interventions a year.
It is a variety which needs little soil; when the specimen is disproportionate to the pot, the transplanting is carried out. A universal soil is utilized, with the addition of polystyrene with dots, in order to lighten the compost; it is necessary to form a good drainage on the bottom of the pot, as it does not bear the water stagnations.
It tolerates even low temperatures, but these should never fall below 12 ° C, the optimal temperature is to
18-22 °c, for this reason it adapts very well to life in the apartment. This variety is very sensitive to high temperatures, so with the increase of these is also appropriate to reduce the intervals of irrigation. It prefers environments with fresh air.
The reproduction of this variety takes place in the summer, given the high temperatures it needs to root. The parts to be used for cutting are the apex or the lateral buds; to avoid the onset of diseases we recommend the use of a very sharp blade. To facilitate the rooting we recommend the use of radical hormones.
It is a species that is rarely attacked by parasites, possibly by green aphids, which can be eliminated by using pesticide products to be sprayed on affected plants.
American Bread Plant – Monstera deliciosa: Tips
Given the development of the Monstera deliciosa and the formation of aerial roots that serve as a support, when the plant gets up it needs a guardian to anchor it. The brace should be covered with moss to facilitate the anchoring of the roots. If the American bread plant has yellow leaves, it should be repotted, increasing drainage and decreasing watering. When the plant, on the other hand, has black spots on the leaves, it is possible that the latter has taken some frosts or blows of cold.
If, on the other hand, it shows some leaves with reddish areas at the extremities, it needs more water.
The name Monstera comes from the Latin mostifer, a plant that generates monsters.
